Big rocks first

One of the first things we did to encourage and help the kids understand savings was to build a story.   'Big Rocks' became the story we would tell the kids every New Year.  We party on New Years Eve, followed by a family meeting on the Jan 1st to discuss the big rocks.

Kids how can you fit all of the following into the jar?

Big Rocks first

If you add sand, followed by little rocks and then try to add the big rocks, there is not enough space to fit all the big rocks.

The jar is your day or your mind.  Sand represents movies, eating donuts and all the less significant things in life. Little rocks represent all the next important things like hanging out with friends etc.  Big rocks are the most important things: Health, Wealth and Education!  By filling sand in first, you are filling the jar by sacrificing space for the big rocks.

What if we spend time on big rocks first?  Then use the remaining time on the next important things like spending time with friends and remaining time on movies and ice creams?

Then, we are able to fit all of them into the jar.

If we can get up in the morning and spend the time on important things first, then we will have enough time to focus and enjoy the other important things in life too.

We loved the TV show NCIS. 'Gibbs's rules' were our favorite part of the show (of course when he head slaps Tony, it is pretty funny!).  So, we had to have rules for the family:
  • Rule # 1 Big rocks first!
  • Rule # 2 Don't stop
So, I think Rule #1 makes sense from the above story, focus on the important things first. I'll talk about Rule # 2 at a different time.

Big rocks first!
